Did I tell you about María?
What an amazing story!
María contacted me a while ago with one specific request; she wanted to speak English to her customers at her restaurant. No problem, I thought…but here’s the catch: originally from Mexico, María had been living in the U.S. for 20 years. Yikes! She had been raising her 4 children – all born here, and she was an entrepreneur and owner of multiple restaurants and grocery stores. Somehow, along the way, while raising children and building a business, she never gained the confidence to speak English to her customers or vendors and felt lost and embarrassed. Feeling intimidated, she would remain in the kitchen to avoid meeting English-speaking visitors to her restaurant. (This is a common story; many non-native speakers come to this country and speak in their own language to their family and friends. The children, however, learn English but don’t speak English with their parents, and the parents become dependent on their children to communicate.) I am delighted – actually thrilled – to say that after a few short months, with a lot of dedicated and consistent practice and repetition, María mastered the specific language required for her businesses, and now she proudly greets customers at the front of her restaurant, with a big smile, and feels totally confident in her ability to communicate in an English-speaking environment. Yay María!
